Internships Abroad

What are Internships Abroad?

Internships abroad are international work experiences that give students and recent graduates the chance to develop skills in a real-world setting while living in a different country.

These internships can vary in length, but many of the most impactful ones last 6 to 12 months. This longer format allows you to fully contribute to projects, understand company culture, and gain deeper experience—especially when working at a startup.

Whether it’s part of a placement year, an Erasmus+ traineeship, or a personal initiative, interning abroad helps you grow professionally and personally. It’s a proven way to boost your CV, build confidence, and open doors to future career opportunities across borders.

Our Latest Internships Abroad

AI / Machine Learning intern

Company Overview
We are a forward-thinking tech startup, founded by experienced technology, security, and design specialists with four successful exits. Frustrated by the lack of trust in traditional messaging platforms — particularly in business communications — we created a new standard: a platform where users retain full control of their data, not the platform owner.

Our product empowers businesses and individuals to communicate securely and privately, with industry-leading innovations such as end-to-end encryption, geofencing, and continuous facial recognition — verifying not just the device but the actual person engaging with it.

About the Role
We are looking for a Technology Intern with a strong academic background and passion for machine learning, computer vision, and advanced biometric systems. You will work directly with our senior technology team on projects that enhance and extend our platform’s capabilities, particularly around biometric authentication and object recognition using machine learning.

We are looking for tenacious individuals with an eye for detail, a deep love for technology, and the courage to push new ideas forward. Ideal candidates are the ones who often lead technical projects among their peers — bold, innovative, yet able to work within a focused plan to drive real results.

If you’re excited about building AI and machine learning solutions in a security-first environment, and want to work on cutting-edge real-world applications, we want to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research and develop machine learning models for biometric authentication (facial recognition, object identification).

  • Explore and experiment with frameworks such as TensorFlow and other modern ML libraries.

  • Support the optimization and integration of AI/ML models into real-time mobile and desktop applications.

  • Collaborate with engineering and design teams to deliver practical, scalable technology solutions.

  • Analyze system performance and model accuracy; recommend improvements based on findings.

  • Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies in AI, computer vision, and cybersecurity.

Ideal Profile

  • Postgraduate or final-year graduate student specializing in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, or related fields.

  • Experience working with TensorFlow and familiarity with other ML frameworks.

  • Strong interest in biometric systems, object identification, and applied AI.

  • Analytical mindset, highly detail-oriented, and motivated to solve complex problems.

  • Courageous in proposing new solutions and rigorous in evaluating them.

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, startup environment where innovation is constant.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.

Internship Details

  • Duration: 6 months

  • Location: Remote (preferably UK or Portugal, GMT time zone), with the possibility of working onsite in Portugal.

  • Compensation: £1000-£1200 monthly

This is not a theoretical exercise — it’s an opportunity to apply your knowledge of machine learning and biometrics to real-world, high-impact problems in a company that’s redefining secure communication. If you have the ambition, resilience, and technical ability to lead at the cutting edge, we look forward to hearing from you.

The Strategy, Sales and Digital Marketing course ran by theInterna has been truly amazing. Packed with content, diagrams and links to external platforms, I have learnt so many new things and it has broadened my areas of interest. I now feel much better equipped and have formed more of an idea of my career path when I graduate. theInterna also set me up with a brilliant internship in Spain, providing a flawless process from the initial call through to securing the placement, and it has been a pleasure having the agency as a point of contact. Outstanding training and support provided by theInterna. The training comprised a variety of invaluable resources, presented clearly and concisely, with a good mixture of videos, articles and exercises to put our knowledge into practice. The calls were useful to consolidate what I’d learnt over the week and get clarity on anything I was unsure of. Not only do I feel better equipped to begin my internship, but I feel inspired to create my own startup in the near future!

Samuel Carro

I personally believe that this course was so beneficial for me whilst also on my placement. Joining a Start-up can be very fast-paced sometimes, and you often have to learn on the job. Doing this course alongside my job allowed me to learn some valuable skills that I needed in future weeks! What I liked most was the flexibility of the course, there were lots of resources that you could use, but if you did not have enough time, there were summary pages that were clear and concise! It as a great and very interesting course.
